The True Cost of the World Cup

The World Cup is in full swing. The first two stages are over, and the quarterfinals are set. Most of the teams have headed home in defeat, while the select few have progressed further into the tournament. Everything will come to a climax on December 18th, when two nations will compete for the title of world champion.

As some may not be aware, the 2022 World Cup is unique in that the tournament is taking place during November and December, rather than the usual practice of June and July. This break from tradition is due to Qatar’s, this year’s host country, brutal summer temperatures. Qatar’s summer temperatures would make playing soccer unsafe and dangerous for the players.

FIFA’s decision to award Qatar with the opportunity to host the World Cup was troubling from the start. In addition to having to move the tournament to winter, there were questions over Qatar being such a small country and their ability to successfully host such a large tournament. Though the logistics of the tournament seem to be going well, there is still questions over the cost.
